That was a great but spontaneous choice to go for a night kayaking in Riga. Even a half an hour before I had to leave, I was doubting about doing it. But in the end, I took the right decision.
It was a warm night, well how warm you can imagine a night at the beginning of the summer in Europe, but those 11C degrees seemed warm to me. We rented canoes and started our journey. Guess, what time we started? Yes! That was at midnight! Seems like the whole universe was at our side because the weather was such a blessing! No wind, no rain, no nothing but peaceful atmosphere.
We were kayaking on the river Daugava, which is Latvia’s biggest river. We took a loop to see the islands of Riga and then we went to the center where the city canal is. Lucavsala island, Zaķusala island, etc. Of course, I had seen the TV tower, but that was my first time when I saw it from the other side and from the waterside. Also kayaking below those bridges was outstanding! That might be cool also at daylight but I could bet that it is much better at night!
Then we kept going and saw the panorama of Riga from the water. Have you seen that? Then you probably know how is it but for those who haven’t done it, I would highly recommend to try it.
After that, we moved to the canal in Riga and then we saw the city center. But not just those places which most the people see. Down there are much more to see. Kayaking under bridges and seeing some unique perspectives surprised me so much! There are actually lots to explore!
And then we were near Andrejsala island and saw some fancy restaurants and cranes of the harbour. It was around 5 AM. We still hadn’t been sleeping till that hour but we were not the only ones. There were people partying. Was so interesting to see that. At the same time, there were some who were already awake to do their jobs. For example, those who work at the harbour. Cranes were moving and ships were preparing to leave the harbour. We were literally next to big ships.
June is the month when days are the longest and nights are the shortest. To be precise, 21st of June is the day of the summer solstice when the day is the longest of the year. We celebrate it on 23rd of June. There will be a big celebration and it deserves a special post about it.
We had to cross the river to get to the other side. And at that moment sun was rising up. That was one of the most beautiful sunrises I have ever seen! All the atmosphere was simply wonderful!
It is not often when you got to see such sunrise. I really appreciate the possibility I had.
Riga panorama from a different point of view.
Then we saw a pier and a factory and other island called Ķīpsala. We were kayaking next to the island but on the side, which people don’t use to see. There were few fishermen who tried to catch some fish. We kept kayaking that way and reached the destination!
Now when I look at the pictures it doesn’t seem to be Riga, at least not Riga that most of the tourists see. Actually, I am pretty sure that most of the locals don’t know those parts of Riga. This was really something! Riga has much more to offer than I thought!
In the end, we were very tired but also very happy, at least me! I loved all those 20 km we did while kayaking. That was the best way how to spend that day. I might repeat this another time because I know that it will be worth that!
